Hello everyone
I wanted to give some more information about American Bresse chickens and talk about scheduling hatches for those who want day old chicks.
This breed is originally from France and the breed itself has been around over 500 years. In France the Poulet Bresse is the gourmet chicken of royalty. This is because the meat is said to be marbled with fat. In reality, the meat has lots of fat found around muscle groups that helps give it its good flavor.
I became a breeder of ABCs because I could no longer buy chicken from supermarkets. I felt there was just something wrong with it. So I started researching chickens. At first I raised Cornish Cross or bought CC’s locally that were pasture raised. Then I found the American Bresse and have done a ton of research on raising and cooking chickens.
As a breeder, I’ve been working on developing my line of ABCs to have larger breasts and more white meat, to be nice, sweet chickens, and trying to keep to the standard of the breed. One of the interesting things about ABCs is their bone to meat ratio. They have a delicate bone structure that is designed to carry the most amount of meat. Plus I have a counter full of carton after carton of eggs for eating!
You can raise them for their eggs or raise them to butcher for their meat or raise them for dual purpose. Or if you want, you can become a breeder of your own flock.
So that’s part of the story of the American Bresse.
I love raising these chickens. They are sweet and funny. The boys are such good providers for their hens. At the moment I have too many roosters cause I love them! But I also love their meat.
My birds mostly free range in several groups. They have clover and oregano to browse on and they take a lot of dust baths in our sandy soil here. They all started out, though, in my house in simple brooders. If you need any help figuring out how to put together a brooder or a coop let me know. Most of ours have been done inexpensively.
My breeders are in their breeding cages so if you want some of these great chickens get on my list. I’ll need to know how to contact you and when you want chicks and about how many you need. Please PM to get on the list and give me your email address so I can send you information on availability. The spring goes fast and so does the summer so keep that in mind. I’m local to the Kingman/ Seligman area so you won’t need to buy shipped chicks anymore.
